The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is one of the nation’s largest private foundations. The Education Program makes grants to improve education by expanding the reach of openly available educational resources, improving California education policies, and by supporting “deeper learning” – a combination of the fundamental knowledge and practical basic skills all students will need to succeed.

The Alliance for Excellent Education

A website supported by the Alliance for Excellent Education to support Deeper Learning. The Alliance for Excellent Education is a Washington, DC–based national policy and advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring that all students, particularly those who are traditionally underserved, graduate from high school ready for success in college, work, and citizenship.

More than 500 schools around the country are currently implementing deeper learning. They are proof points—examples that show deeper learning can improve student outcomes. They are getting results by creating dynamic learning environments that enable students to develop a deep understanding of core content and can use that knowledge to solve problems, think critically, communicate effectively, and be self-reflective about their learning. These schools are part of ten school networks, each of which has its own set of principles about organizing schools. For that reason, the schools are not the same—there is no one approach to deeper learning. What they share is a commitment to a broader set of outcomes for young people than conventional approaches to schooling provide.

The Council of State Governments

Founded in 1933, The Council of State Governments is our nation’s only organization serving all three branches of state government. CSG is a region-based forum that fosters the exchange of insights and ideas to help state officials shape public policy. Funded with a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, CITE launched a comprehensive probe into deeper learning—an effort designed to ensure students master academic core content using higher-order skills such as inquiry, analysis and critical thinking.

Education for Life and Work: Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century

A report that clearly defines “21^st century skills” or “deeper learning” and lays the groundwork for policy and further research in the field.

Edutopia

Edutopia is a website that is part of the George Lucas Education Foundation (GLEF). The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF) documents and disseminates the most exciting classrooms where these innovations are taking place. The website is designed to inspire, inform and accelerate positive change in schools and districts by shining a spotlight on evidence-based strategies and best practices that improve learning and engagement for students.

Getting Smart

Getting Smart® is a community passionate about innovations in learning. They are advocates for better K-12 education as well as early, post-secondary and informal learning opportunities for all students. They attempt to accelerate and improve the shift to digital learning. They cover important events, trends, products, books, and reports. They have resources specific to deeper learning.

Mindshift

Launched in 2010 by KQED and NPR, MindShift explores the future of learning in all its dimensions, covering cultural and technology trends, innovations in education, groundbreaking research, education policy, and more. The editor is Tina Barseghian.
